Picking a cake size is the part most people get stuck on. Order too small and someone misses out. Order too big and half of it goes home in foil. This guide makes it simple: here is what each cake size serves, so you can order with confidence.

A quick note before the numbers: cake size is measured by the diameter in inches, and the number of layers changes how many slices you get. A two-layer cake is taller, so it cuts into more, and larger party slices give fewer servings than thin dessert slices. Treat these as friendly estimates, not an exact science.

How many people does each cake size serve?

SizeSingle layerTwo layers (taller)
4 inch3 to 56 to 8
6 inch6 to 1012 to 15
8 inch14 to 2024 to 30
10 inch22 to 3038 to 46

So what does a 6-inch cake serve?

A 6-inch cake is our most popular birthday size. As a single layer it comfortably serves 6 to 10 people, and as a taller two-layer cake it stretches to 12 to 15 party slices. It is the sweet spot for most home and office birthdays: big enough to feel like a proper celebration cake, small enough that nothing is wasted.

If you are feeding a handful of people, a 6-inch two layer is usually the right call. For a small gathering of two or three, a 4-inch is plenty. For a bigger party, step up to an 8-inch or 10-inch.

Matching size to your event

  • A treat for yourself or one other person: a 4-inch, single layer.
  • A small birthday (up to around 15): a 6-inch, two layer. This is what we recommend for most birthdays.
  • A proper party (around 20 to 30): an 8-inch, two layer, our main party cake.
  • A big celebration (40 plus): a 10-inch, two layer, or a tiered cake. Message us for anything larger so we can plan it.

How to cut a cake so everyone gets a slice

Getting the servings above means cutting the cake in the right pattern. For a round cake, the tidiest way is:

  1. Cut the cake into long parallel strips about one inch apart, across the whole cake.
  2. Turn and cut across those strips, again about one inch apart, to make small rectangular slices.

This grid method gives far more even slices than cutting wedges, which is why a 6-inch cake can serve up to 15. For a traditional wedge look at a party, cut fewer, larger pieces and plan for the lower end of the serving range.
